Freestanding ERs — History of TAFEC
Baytown, Texas, resident Jeanne Shipp is a co-founder of three freestanding emergency rooms in Texas. Jeanne Shipp is also a member of the Texas Association of Freestanding Emergency Rooms (TAFEC).
Almost 11 years ago, Texas became the first state to permit freestanding emergency rooms to operate in the state. The licencing came as the result of House Bill 1357, which established these freestanding facilities as legitimate emergency medical providers. The Texas Association of Freestanding Emergency Centers was the culmination of the meeting held the summer 2009. The organization was created to ensure fair regulation and uniform standards across the industry.
The group was well-received by legislatures and is considered a major voice for the sector. One of its first major endeavors was to reduce frivolous administrative costs. Known as HB 3085, the bill passed with great success. The organization has now grown significantly since its inception. Today, 33 member-companies belong to TAFEC.
